Agile Methodologies for Team Management

If you are looking to improve teamwork among your employees, there is a term you should know, and that is “Agile methodologies”. You may not have heard of this term before, but in recent years it has become a significant trend in the business world. It emerged in 2001 after a meeting where Kent Beck, a software engineer from the United States, gathered several industry experts to discuss software development processes.

During this meeting, they drafted the Agile Manifesto, which proposed alternatives to the traditional development and management processes, as these were often very rigid and strict. In contrast, Agile methodologies assert that people are more important than processes, and that it is the processes that should adapt to people, not the other way around. For this reason, at Teaming Labs, we will explain what this methodology is and its applications in team management.

What is Agile methodology and what is it for?

Agile methodologies are processes through which teams can manage projects by breaking them down into small phases, based on the constant collaboration of the people involved. In fact, one of the principles of the manifesto is that information is best conveyed face-to-face, which makes team meetings critically important. Additionally, these methods help teams provide quick responses to situations that arise during projects, and they encourage high-quality final outcomes.

Moreover, these methodologies are designed to motivate individuals, as this is key to creating a trusting environment where creativity can flow. Client collaboration is also important, as each process should begin with the client detailing how they want the final product to be and what problems it should solve. This way, the team can meet (as often as necessary) to develop a quality product that meets expectations. Continuous collaboration between the team and the client is essential for decision-making and project development.

Some types of Agile methodologies focused on teamwork

Scrum

This methodology is one of the most well-known and involves daily team meetings to discuss the process and make necessary adjustments. Moreover, there will be different types of meetings with various purposes: planning the project, reviewing how it is being managed, or reflecting on necessary modifications.

The project is divided into small stages that help quickly identify challenges and expedite their resolution. In this process, there is a leader whose role is to eliminate obstacles and guide the team so they can carry out their work effectively. Here, teamwork is essential for successfully completing the project.

Extreme Programming XP

In this case, processes can change completely based on their own needs, and the purpose (in addition to delivering a quality product tailored to the client's needs) is to enhance the relationship between client and employees. With Extreme Programming XP, relationships among employees are also fostered, as they often work in pairs and aim for teamwork. As with all Agile processes, communication is fundamental to ensure that both employees and clients end up satisfied.

Kanban

This type of methodology is based on visual elements, where the team creates a scheme, diagram, or generally a physical representation of the project, its tasks, and everything it entails. Tasks can be moved between different phases according to the project's needs. In fact, all team members have access to this visual representation of the project so that tasks can be distributed effectively and none are forgotten. Thus, teamwork is much more efficient than with traditional methodologies.

The benefits for team and people management

In addition to all the benefits that Agile methodologies bring for delivering quality products that satisfy clients, these processes are fundamentally based on teamwork. With them, employees must work shoulder to shoulder throughout the development, and each one takes on tasks according to their skills.

Continuous feedback among them, and also with the client, helps ensure that the final product meets expectations. Furthermore, by breaking projects into small stages and tasks, creativity and productivity are enhanced, giving each individual a sense of purpose. Every team member is important and essential for the final outcome.
